Useless for USB and SD use November 15, 2008 The sole reason I purchased this item is because it played AVI files from SD cards and USB flash drives and was DivX compatible. The description and all the reviews boast about how *nifty* this USB/SD feature is, however, none of them tell you the QUALITY of the movies playing from these sources.
I loaded several movies onto a USB flash drive and also an SD card and tested them both. When playing high-quality AVIs, the video is horrible. All moving objects are very blocky and digitized looking, like the processor or graphics card can't keep up. However, low quality AVIs (cartoons, etc) play beautifully. Too bad I didn't buy this for watching cartoons :(
Just to be sure, I popped both the flashdrive and the SD card into my laptop and tried them there as well...directly from the flashdrive/card, not my HD. They both played beautifully. I even tried the SD card in my PDA and that played beautifully too. That's three different players and four different movies, and only the Coby player had this problem.
I actually love everything ELSE about this player. But I had to give it 1 star because I bought it for one specific purpose and that feature is useless to me. I'm going to be returning it.
If you're buying it for playing DVD disks or music, or watching very low quality AVI files (cartoons, etc) via USB or SD, then I highly recommend this player.
But if you're looking for something to play high-quality AVI's (most movies) via USB or SD, then this is not the one you want.
Liked it so much, I purchased a second! November 12, 2008 This is great at the Gym. I can swivel the screen around and fold it flat. It then can rest on the exercise bike monitor and I can ride and watch! Perfect for that hour bike ride. I liked it so much, I got one for my wife. She loves it.
Perfect.
No problems so far November 4, 2008 We got this thing to placate our car-hating little toddler, who is addicted to Baby Einstein. I loaded several shows on a 4GB USB stick and now we have a selection ready to go when things get desperate. They also kept her calm and happy during a recent hospital stay. I was worried that she'd be unable to resist grabbing the USB stick protruding from the side, but she learned quickly that her show stops when she does that -- no more problems.
We've beat this up a bit and flown overseas with it and no problems so far -- 4 months and counting, finger crossed. I did notice a few times that playing back some .avi or .divx files, when there is a lot of movement on screen (dense flock of flamingos, for example), it can shudder for a few seconds -- the little processor is probably getting overworked, but it could also be that the old, abused USB flash drive that I'm using is at fault. But the audio and video stay in sync and playback continues normally after a few moments.
It comes with a workable back-of-seat hanger, car dc power adapter, home ac power adapter, and stuff I never use like a remote and passable headphones. You will want to purchase some sort of carrying case.
All in all, it does what I bought it to do, I'm a happy customer!
Unreliable November 1, 2008 Theoretically this is a great product. All the good stuff that has been said is pretty much true.
However...
The first one I bought lasted about 6 months. Then, it just quit playing dvd's, cd's. So I bought another one. August 30,2008. November 1, 2008 it simply doesn't even play any kind of disk. Bought it brand new. 2 in a row??? Maybe I should change the title to Reliable - you may rely on it to crash.
Fortunately, I bought a 2-year replacement plan (after the product's 1-year warranty). Wish me luck.
Amazon's customer service, by the way, has always been top-notch.
Coby TF-DVD7377 7-Inch DivX Compatible Portable DVD October 27, 2008 I gave it a 2/5 because I don't think the company is seriously about quality. The biggest disappointment I had with this portable DVD is its inability to use the A/V input. Make no mistake about it, it has the A/V input and output switch, but the A/V input simply doesn't work. The box/manual never confirms it has or not, but it has the notation "--". The 2 dashes tell me nothing. I called their support - 1st, not sure. 2nd try - it doesn't support A/V input. I went on and ask what's the A/V input for - he (support) said I don't know. It sounds like it's time to push the product out to market, and they could carless about a defect (the AV input) used by less (say 10%) ppl use it.
