Amazon.com Product Description
Whether you're looking for a stylish portable alarm clock radio or an MP3-capable CD player to accompany you on the road, Grundig's Eton Ego 4000 Plus may be calling your name. The compact unit uses Grundig's proprietary detachable speaker docking system, which lets you remove the speakers from the exterior of the folding lid and position them apart, like your home speakers. Or, you can leave the speakers attached and play the unit like a small boombox. In any case, Grundig also provides a pair of lightweight street-style stereo headphones to bypass the speakers altogether for private listening.

The Eton Ego 4000 Plus plays not just audio CDs, but recordable CDs filled with MP3 files, too, with ID3 tag capability (for artist and title display) and the benefit of 40-second shock protection (or an amazing 120 seconds for MP3). Bass boost and a selection of five preset equalization curves help you tailor the sound to your personal preference, and you can listen in various random or repeat modes or program up to 20 CD/MP3 CD tracks to play in sequence.

The player's fold-up top section puts a backlit LCD in clear view, especially handy when using the built-in alarm and/or calendar features. The clock offers a date indicator, 12-hour time mode, dual alarms (with snooze), and local/world time. You or your partner can wake to the radio, a CD, or a buzzer. For power, use four AA batteries or the unit's AC power adapter (both included).

Choose from 15-, 30-, and 60-minute sleep settings, or rely on auto power off to shut the player down at the end of a disc. The FM/AM radio comes with 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM), auto scanning, and antennas.

Grundig's design-driven Eton line of portable-audio offers a graceful combination of form and function. Unique product design is the basis for all models, as well as functionality above and beyond other products in the same category. With features that satisfy high-tech, style-conscious listeners, Eton products have an added flare that will attract people seeking distinctive portable audio.

What's in the Box
CD unit, speakers, headphones, carrying case, an AC power adapter, four AA batteries, and a user's manual.

1 out of 5 stars Not Even One-Star-Worthy   July 26, 2008
This is one defective little unit. While mine will play CDs and radio OK, NONE of the programming buttons work as they should. Holding down the "World/Local" button to set the time produces an "Alarm-1 Mode" reading and cycles you through all the options for alarm 1 & 2.

Not that it matters as this rig will not allow me to SET the alarm (or time, but I already mentioned that). The only way to get the time right is to wait until 12:00AM on January 1st. And THEN the year would still be 2000.

Avoid this thing except to regift it to someone you detest.

1 out of 5 stars Very Low quality product   October 4, 2006
I bought this for 49.99 at an outlet store and feel I got ripped off. The finish is peeling off from day one. At first I thought it was the protective plastic that you are supposed to peel off. The radio reception is much worse than my other Eton. When I press the "up" button to change teh station frequency, often the CR player starts.
Do not buy this from a place that does not give an unconditional money back guarantee, or better yet, choose another product.

2 out of 5 stars Fine While it Lasted   August 31, 2006
I purchased mine in August 2004 and it is dead as of August 2006. For travel, while it worked, it was fine; I loved the sleep function, the sound was OK although I chose to use portable speakers with it. But it started behaving peculiarly about six months ago, not starting right up at times. Considering the price and the brand name, this portable player should have had a longer lifespan.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!   March 30, 2006

Have used my Grundig Eton for a couple years and love it! I don't need to run it on batteries, but love how it plays CD's, MP3's and is great for recorded books. I do a lot of hand sewing and find it the perfect companion. I like not having to wear a headset or earpiece to hear it, however, it has earpieces and a nice headset if you need them.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this Thing called a Radio   February 16, 2006

I have rarely been so dissapointed as I was when I received this thing (I hesitate to call it a radio.) I live in Australia and do a bit of international travel. I wanted a travelling radio (AM in particular)that also plays my CD/MP3's. Read the info, and it states in the manual and ON THE UNIT that it is both European and USA frequency compatible in the AM band. NOT TRUE! The US version is US and the European version is European only. So yes it is a travelling radio, it just doesnn't like to travel far!
The MP3's that I played on the unit, skipped within the tracks, sigh. The keys to set the time/date were hypersensitive and skipped randomly between functions. Yuck.
Not even worth considering (or spending more time on writing this review)
