Great piece of hardware, poor accompanying software November 14, 2008 Like many others before me, I want to say that the Samsung P2 is a great MP3 player with an interface that is well designed and a touch screen that works pretty well. I can think of few ways to improve the player itself, along the lines of what other reviewer have already suggested, but at this time I'd like to point out that the Samsung/Emodio software accompanying the MP3 player contains major weaknesses, especially in the area of podcast files management and synchronization. For instance, video files need to be converted to a proprietary SVI format and many people have had trouble getting the conversion to work (a solution that seems to work is to upgrade to WMP11 and install a stable version of FFDSHOW). The synchronization between podcast files on your PC and on your device can get stuck. Other times, the same PC file will be copied multiple times on the P2 with different names. Also, there is no synchronization button available on the Emodio interface and when the software doesn't start synch'ing automatically, it's not intuitive what you need to do to synch manually. On one hand, the people who are going to use the P2 to watch video listen to music will enjoy this player immensely given its great audio and video abilities. On the other hand, podcast listeners will have to put up with the poor functionality of the Emodio software, or look for a different software solution that can work with the P2.
Great MP3 player! October 30, 2008 Great MP3 player. Touch screen works really well. Sound is great. Definitely worth the money. Without the screen protector the screen is a little sensitive but not hard to use. Very good purchase.
95% perfect October 16, 2008 the p2 is an amazing product, and samsung really did a great job making this product, because almost everything about it makes it better than its competition (itouch.)
+pros -excellent sound quality and EQ.- the p2 has phenominal sound quality when compared to other mp3 players, and the ipod especailly. it sounds great without eq as it is, but there is 10 preset sounds in the menu, and mydNSE, which is custom eq you set up yourself. with the updated firmware, you can save 3 custom settings. given you have a good pair of wired headphones (opt. bluetooth disable the eq), the clarity and treble are ever present, the mids are excellent, and the bass comes out heavy and undistorted, giving an overall well polished sound. given the fact i'm hardcore audiophile, i know what quality sound is.. -touch screen/display quality- the touch interface is excellently designed minus a few quirks do to samsung going feature crazy and thinking of 2 or 3 different ways to do the same task. but otherwise navigation is easy and to the point. and its FUN. screen is extremely sensitive, no pressure is required, and it only responds to your fingertips.(there is a certain way to use your fingers to use it though, explained in the box) the screen is very clear, and all the colours are rich and full. clarity is insurpassed by anything ive ever seen but an hdtv. with pics from my fuji camera on it, the quality is nothing less than perfect. i dont have much to say about the video quality, i only have music videos. but its good as far as i can judge. 30 fps video encoding is a plus. -bluetooth- no other music player i can thnk of has bluetooth(im sure their out there) the p2 can be paired with cell phones for making calls, which is pretty much a useless feature, but it can also be paired with b.t. headsets. i have sony br-dt22's, which dont cut, have good clarity and sounds pretty high quality. i dont like that the eq is disabled when i use them though. value- considerable value, even at full retail price($225), i got mine for $135. and everywhere i looked on the web they were on sale. bluetooth sets it apart from the mainstream
now the cons.. battery life- even though the battery is claimed to go for 30 hours on 1 charge, samsung is off by about 24-27 hours. just the smallest change in settings, such as upping the brightness by 1 notch, or most noticeably using custom eq, the battery life is significantly decreased, common in samsungs history of mp3 players. using bluetooth headphones instead of corded headphones definitely helps. -glare/ prone to smudges and scratches- the display is excellent, but when exposed to the sun, any smudges and scratches(which come in excess after using the p2 for awhile,) make it almost impossible to see the display, even on max brightness. -proprietary usb- you cant charge off the cable, which, unless you have a laptop handy, makes it difficult to use for extended peroids of time on a trip. -MEMORY- p2 lost its 5th star here because there isn't enough memory! surely they could have fit another few gigs in it standard. i lost my abilty to sync entire albums, now i have to pick out the indiv. songs and data i want. even the nano (4g) has more standard. consider either compression software or get the 8gb. a 16gb is coming.
even though its got a few problems, its worth checking out because of value, features, (samsung went completely feature crazy on this one), bluetooth, and the touch screen is fun and easy to use. ipod killer is a bonus
It's SO pretty! August 2, 2008 I've always been a samsung fan, and this is definitely a great product. Sound is great, features are great and as always, it's so pretty!!
Great buy July 12, 2008 I will keep it simple. P2 is a great purchase. Incredible sound, great looks. I have not used the bluetooth feature yet, but other aspects are flawless.
It sounds even better if you can get it for about $130 from Amazon.
